Circus artist Saana Leppänen’s solo performance Kahlekuningatar (The Chain Queen) explores gender inequality through contemporary circus. Kahlekuningatar dives into the intersections of power, gender, and the body: not humbly, but crowned and unapologetic.
On stage, we see a figure whose aerial acrobatics with metal chains are simultaneously brutal and beautiful. The chains act both as obstacles and enablers, instruments of power and symbols of freedom.
The performance plays with the forms and meanings of gender, dismantling roles and exposing their absurd power structures. The aesthetics of drag, bodily expression that exaggerates gender stereotypes, and a bold, flirtatious energy intertwine with physical circus artistry.
Kahlekuningatar is a tribute to those who break their chains and make their voices heard for their rights.
